In 1983 I was invited by David Murray,a major sponsor of various sports in Scotland i.e. Basketball ,Volleyball and Hockey as well as being at that time the Owner of Rangers Foootball Club, to act as Head of Delegation for his team "Murray International Metals"representing Scotland at an International event named the "William Jones International Tournament"to be held in Taipei, Tiawan
Being a qualified F.I.B.A. Referee and a Commissioner and being well aquainted with these types of event, I accepted and accompanied the team on a long airtrip to the Far East.
Two memories of this trip will live long with me.
The
first was shortly after arriving, I was to meet a representative of
our shirt sponsors. He supplied for us,( after measuring each
player) 2 full strips one red with white edgings etc and another in
white with red edgings and all the players names on the back in chinese
characters, at no cost and made overnight and supplied the following day.
Needless to say we were very popular with the spectators when we went on court, even more so when we played in the final of the event in front of nearly 10,000 spectators. Regretfully we were beaten by a very good team from USA -Vanderbilt Universary.
It was during this tournament that we came across my second memory. Playing against the Japanese National Team .they included what at that time was the tallest man in the world.
He was 7' 5'' tall. and the photo shows me presenting him with a Scottish Tourist Board leaflet which invites anyone to visit Scotland.
What a trip !! What a memory !!
